The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s successful Household Hazardous Waste Mobile Site Collections is in its seventh season. Established in conjunction with the Intergovernmental Cooperation Council, the collection program is designed to alleviate public health, environmental and safety concerns associated with the improper disposal of household hazardous materials. The program, which serves residents of Milwaukee County, encourages homeowners to rid their basements, garages and storage areas of environmentally harmful and dangerous chemicals by bringing them to various mobile collection units as they travel throughout the area between April and October, or to drop them off at two designated permanent facilities. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers a substance hazardous if it can catch fire, react or explode when mixed with other substances, is corrosive or if it is toxic. One of the worst ways to dispose of these products is to dump them down the drain or sewer, or to flush them down the toilet. |
