Law Enforcement Agencies in Southeastern Wisconsin have joined together to decrease speeding and increase safety belt use
through increased enforcement.
WHY?
29% of all fatal crashes in Wisconsin were speed related.
Chances of death double for every 10mph over 50 mph.
90% of the speed related fatal crashes did not occur on the interstate.
People feel that speeders endanger their safety and neighborhood safety.
Speeding does endanger the driver, passengers, other motorists and pedestrians.
Speeding reduces reaction time and increases stopping distance.
Stopping distances increase disproportionately with faster speeds, for example:
20 mph = 40 feet
40 mph = 120 feet
60 mph = 240 feet
Speeding reduces ability to steer around curves or avoid objects in the road.
The number of crashes go down when people drive at the posted limit.
Did you know that passenger cars use approximately 50% more fuel at 75mph than at 55mph? And pollutants increase by up to 100% at 65mph vs. 55mph?
